World must act to stop ISIS from getting nuclear weapons: Chilling warning from Government

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said the danger of oil-rich Daesh building a nuclear arsenal was a “new and emerging threat” and urged major nations to stop them getting their murderous hands on key technology or expertise.

Last year’s National Security Strategy set out steps to prevent nuclear weapons or intelligence falling in to the hands of so-called “non-state actors” like the jihadist death cult.

And asked by The Sun if Britain sees IS as a “future threat that might seek to acquire nuclear weapons”, Mr Fallon replied: “So far as nuclear weapons and non-state actors are concerned, yes this is a new and emerging threat.

“It is obviously a concern that we will see non-state actors with the finance and perhaps some of the technical know-how seeking to get hold of nuclear weapons.

“That is why we maintain very strict export control criteria on some of the technologies involved and why we need to be on our guard that they should not get that access.”

peaking at the Policy Exchange think tank, Mr Fallon blasted “naïve” peacenik opponents like Jeremy Corbyn who want the UK to ditch its nuclear weapons.

The Defence Secretary admitted our nukes were “never intended to combat terrorism”, but said scrapping them would put the country at risk from “extreme threats” in the future.

He said enemies would see disarmament as a “weakness” and that abandoning the nuclear deterrent would be “an act of supreme irresponsibility”
